Circumstances of death War Diary - Ovillers Trench 5th Dorsets moved from Oiller Trench to a position in support trenches. Attack started 12.35pm. 5th Dorsets followed the front line at 500 yd distance. Battalion started well rom information received later. Battalion suffered heavily from enemy barrage before reaching first objective also suffering heavily from bombs, machine guns and snipers from Germans who were still in Mouguet Farm. Could not get any messages back. All Company Commanders and Company Sgt Major knocked out in early advance. Casualties amongst NCOs heavy (410).
